In more than half of all Massachusetts divorces, one or both parties represent themselves. Often the decision to go "pro se" is made for financial reasons. However, increasingly, it is the informed person wanting to be in charge of his or her own case who decides to act and to speak "for herself."

Isabella Jancourtz has consulted with and coached hundreds of individuals going through divorce mediation and/or representing themselves in court. She also advises persons represented by counsel who wish to have a second opinion. Affordability of legal services has always concerned her. Although Isabella no longer litigates, for over 35 years she charged "flat fees" to represent clients in both contested and uncontested matters. Her regular hourly rate is $160 and she has a sliding scale to make sure that anyone who wishes to is able to consult with her.

Isabella graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1974 and first self-published "The Massachusetts Woman's Divorce Handbook" later that year. In the mid-70's, she was counsel to the Boston chapter of the National Organization for Women and ran its lawyer referral service. In 1983 she was a founding member of The Divorce Center, then in Natick, participating in many seminars. For many years Isabella also taught a course for women called Empowerment in Divorce at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.
